To the Children

miguel
Miguel March Russell

Children, you can embrace a new concept and discover that there is no Age Barrier to your possible dreams. This could be your time to shine. Dare to dream, dare to pick up a musical instrument and hit that first beat.

Miguel Marcel Russell, Percussionist
Born in New York City on July 12, 2002, it sometimes seems that Miguel Marcel Russell was destined to be a drummer from the time he took his first steps. He has been nurtured by a diverse mix of African, Latin, Brazilian and Haitian music styles throughout and finds little difficulty in drawing upon each to develop his own voice. Miguel includes among his musical influences master percussionists Giovanni Hidalgo, the late Carlos "Patato" Valdez and Babatunde Olatunji.

Miguel began his formal training at the age of four under the watchful eye of multi-faceted percussionist Don Eaton at the Harlem School of the Arts. His energy and enthusiasm along with an ability to adapt seamlessly into various musical settings has created many opportunities for Miguel to perform throughout the New York area and South Florida where he now resides. He has appeared recently on various broadcast media programs including "NBC - South Florida Today", "The Fernando Hidalgo Show" and "Sesame Street". In addition, Miguel was a featured artist in "Rhythms of Africa" concert produced by renowned drummer, William Stewart of the reggae band, "Third World". Miguel displays an uncommon determination and thirst for music and hopes to someday follow in the footsteps of the masters and maintain the traditions that guide him through life.

He now is under the tutelage of Willie Stewart himself.

One Child – Miguel Russell – One Example – One possibility!

To the Parents

Parents, you are a key to your children's success in a unique area of learning and living and loving. Your commitment will make or break this journey. Not everyone is meant to be doctors and lawyers – musician's work takes an equal amount of dedication and discipline. If you see an interest or a gift in your child - support, harness, encourage, and let them know that anything is possible. You are an integral part of making them a success. It will not happen without you. Invest in your kids; with only 10 hours of tuition through the Rhythms of Africa program, the children bloomed into a professional format and developed the confidence and the potential to play in front of an audience of 800, along with other professional musicians. Parents! Can you imagine what would happen if they got five years of tuition?

I was able to view a group of students transition from simply enjoying the sounds of their instruments - into playing together and making music.

To the Families

Families, you can bring family unity back, bring many generations together, get grandmas and grandpas out of the house to celebrate life with children and grandchildren. No experience is necessary, only the desire to enjoy life and celebrate with your offspring, and their offspring, strengthening the bond with family values, support, memories and music.

To the Teachers

Teachers, you are the student's mentor, parent, advisor as well as someone who the child looks up to and trusts. "When discussing the reasons why the arts should remain in the curriculum of our schools and colleges, I am passionate. In order to help our children we can lend valuable assistance through YOU, our teachers. Assisting and encouraging and sharing our skills and knowledge and ideas in workshops with teachers gives 'Solutions In Music' the chance to give something valuable back and contribute in shaping the next generation in a positive way. YOU are key to this successful process."
